Block combinations

In building in vanilla texture minecraft, I often find myself wondering what block types should I use. I want to compile a list to look at that would also be very helpful to newer builders. Some block combinations (what I'm talking about) are like stone bricks with glowstone and iron bars or sandstone and purple wool or wood and grass. Any additional combinations you would know are helpful.
