Detail: Realism, pillars, stairs, patterns, noise and flow.

Goodtimeswithscar is a great builder on YouTube and he has a lot of tutorials.

Check out Mithrintia, the IP is "mc.mithrintia.com" I've recently come on there and got member access on there. There are plenty of tutorials and and people to help you. If you can do a decent 32x32 plot sized build you can get member access, which shall get you a 300x300 plot. They require a high amount of detail, using depth, interiors, terra-forming, and custom trees. Mithrintia is also the build team that built the HyPixel spawn. This is my entry on the 32x32 plot which got me member access, http://imgur.com/a/K1GTn . You can find the texture pack on the server, it's a custom one with a mix of texture packs. You'll find plenty of inspiration and design tips on this server. Practice makes perfect, good luck!

If you join the server mc.cobaltium.net and do /home Z645 you'll see my in progress mountain castle. Also loads of great builds that are made there. (Btw, this isn't my server, just one I play on).

Some simple ways to make sure your build isn't boring is by making sure not all of it is a box shape. Or just one block type. Make it a nice 3D type, bring layers out on the sides. Add different blocks that might match. Also a nice tip is to use a different texture pack other than the default. It does help a lot. Like medieval texture pack for a medieval build.
