Terraforming
who's with me that terraformer's should leave their maps open for public use, so that way adventure map makers don't have to make an awesome terrain as well as awesome buildings?

Guys, I am working on a MASSIVE Middle Earth Map, check out my SIG
Note that I have a "resources" section that credits when I use other people's work.

FalloutNV4evaCOOPERx223xWell if you've used schematics that are indeed for public use, then very well. But based on the fact that you said;
[
Yeah, I have to concur with you here. I don't make something thinking, "Oh, I'm going to put this up for everyone to use and just let them pretend it's their own stuff!" No, if someone uses my stuff, they can spend the extra 5 seconds to copy over a name, and if they're nice enough, a link to my channel. Regardless of how small something is, even if it's a simple "hut" in an entire kingdom, they deserve the credit for the work they put forth.
Also, Notch doesn't own Minecraft, Mojang technically does. They also have it in their Terms of Use and Branding pages that:
This applies to the worlds and items as well. It's been written as well that plagiarism is frowned upon. Granted, credit for a bazillion people would be a pain in the arse, but who is the blame for using that many skyscrapers?
I understand your view as well, however credit should be given whenever and always when something is used.
Like I said I want to make a life sized city. I like city building games but am sad none let you build a city that is actually city sized. Minecraft infinite map and habbit of loading and deloading chunks means I can. But I cannot build all of that myself. I make some things in it and have made some skyscrapers. I especially make all the buildings that have a specific purpose myself. Such as my subway stations and train stations and what not.
For making stuff like the roads and subway tunnels I made them as schematics I can copy and paste together to save time. Real life cities are huge and do have thousands upon thousands of buildings. Look at pictures of cities from the air where the city goes beyond the horrizon.
My goal is to make that. Which is impossible to do if I make the whole thing.

COOPERx223xavmf8That is like saying if you don't credit notch for every build its plagiarism.
What...?
I don't think you understand what plagiarism really is then. Apparently my definitions didn't help.
You wouldn't have to credit Notch at all because it is public property, assuming you don't have a cracked version of Minecraft, in which case that is stealing as well. The builds aren't his, but the game is. You're just using the game to make the building.
However, if someone makes a building that is not intended for reproduction or public use, and you use this in your own work, you need to credit them.
It is completely possible to give credit to everyone, it may just be some extra work. By not doing that, you just prove yourself to be lazy and inconsiderate to those who you took work from to make your own stuff.
And flagging for plagiarism doesn't mean anyone is a jerk, it means they're doing the right thing.
If someone has a skyscraper for upload as a schematic then it is intended for public use. Most of the stuff is from skyscraper packs. As in someone made a bunch of buildings put them in schematic form and then uploaded a file full of them. Every project I have used was downloaded in a MCEdit schematic form.
Someone would not put a project in a form of a map editor schematic if the intent was not to use it. Entirely possible to credit everyone? no its not I at this present time have 5 thousand schematics some of which have not been added yet but will. I want to make a real life scale city. For that you cant make all the structures yourself.
It is utterly impractical to credit that many. I do believe a moderator would agree with me that its not feasible. If I use schematics and I clearly have said in the description that I have used downloaded schematics.

Just to add an opinion cause I'm board out of my mind right now, I always make my custom terrain for my build, the one time I did leak a map, everyone who used it made a crappy little castle on it and only credited me with a little -terraforming by mikeyto1o- at the bottom of the page. The only reason there little 10 minute project got any views was because all there pics were about the terrain.
This feeds into my idea for you to give a person credit on a project who would also get some xp for it

It's not you should always give credit it's more like you have to because plaigerism is illegal.
Big changes or small changes, you should allways give credit, you use and modify something that was not made by you.
If you dont credit the original creator you end up with stolen content, and if you upload it, high chances are that it will be removed.
Creators know hiw their maps look and can easily recognize them

I am not using a map for this project actually. I use a custom flat land map that I made using the options in minecraft. It is not plagiarism . But I am not going to bother explaining that to you guys, Since only one guy could even seem to grasp the concept that I am not stealing anything.
Stealing gets thrown around way to much. That is like saying if you don't credit notch for every build its plagiarism. If I post it and someone flags it for not crediting everyone because its simply not possible to do so then you are simply a jerk period. Most of it I cant even tell where it even came from. Most things do not tell you who made it unless its a schematic pack someone made, or the structures were taken from a existing map, even then often you cant tell who made it.

Hope this helps:
Plagiarism, as defined by Merriam-Webster:
to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source.
Also, Wikipedia:
Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the "wrongful appropriation," "close imitation," or "purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of them as one's own original work.

avmf8The site simply says you cant just repost a project. I mean common get real I cannot credit 2000 or more names. Also people need to stop calling it plagiarism that is going to far. That is where you take a work of art or something and claim it as your own and sell it.
First of all, c'mon*.
Second, if you take someone else's work and use it, you need to give credit. Otherwise it is, in fact, plagiarism. You can credit all of those people as long as you keep a list of the names. Just copy/paste them all into one document as you come across them. If you don't know the name of whoever created it because you got it off a server or something, then just say something along the lines of "Thanks to the builders on (servername) for the use of their builds", etc.
Also, in response to OP, by Terraforming do you mean using programs such as WorldPainter?
It doesn't really matter how much you change of someone else's work, you should still give them the credit for giving you a starting point. If you changed 70% of their work, there's still 30% that's their work entirely.
70% Yours +30% Theirs = Credits still owed.
HOWEVER;
100% Yours + 0% theirs = No credit owed. It is your work.

The real issue you have to consider is that most terraformers (myself included) make terrain for a singular purpose in mind, then build in structures to compliment that goal. If we make more than we need to, we're wasting our time. We build our landscapes for ourselves.

Really? Because I see tons of maps with no structures of any kind. on them. Also common for what I am making it is impossible to give credit to everyone. Also that is bunk I can't post it on here since that map I showed is on this site. They use that world map site as the download site. If I cleerly state what the world is a mix of shematics I have downloaded or altered with some of my buildings mixed in that is not breaking a rule.

Then some people on here say a bunch of mean un necessary things. Try and say I committed plagiarism to my face and I would deck you one. Because it is not and to even suggest that is very unfair.
I do not have this insane need to be credited. I don't have much project right now but when I do feel free to use anything I have. I don't require credit the fact someone makes use of what I made is enough credit for me. But if someone does use my work they should give me a favorite and a diamond but that is it.

Just as the picture said, this topic is the most pointless of all. =-=
It wouldn't be original if adventure map makers use other's terraform...... plus everyone have their own way of making these things.
I suggest that you all read Notch's point of view on plagiarism, copyrights, Trademarks, and patents. Check out his blog, The Word Of Notch.
As a "terraformer" myself, it would bug me if someone used my material and didn't say "Hey I got this cool map from Fallout! - (Link)". I'm fine with people using my material so long as they provide some credit towards myself. I didn't make that terrain to have it used by someone else as their own effort. Granted, people will do that anyways, but I don't feel it should be encouraged.
I'm honestly more than happy if someone can use my map to make something cool, but if I put effort into a map, or any build at all, and am nice enough to let you download it, you could take the second to copy and paste my username into a credit list.

Still there is a huge difference between making a few small changes to something and uploading it as opposed to something where you changed most of it. If I made a few changes I give credit if I pretty much rebuilt the thing and it ends up being almost a new project at that point I don't. I have done that many times took a building and made so many alterations that I find later almost none of the original remains.
Also I am talking about making a map like this http://www.minecraftworldmap.com/worlds/_13qn#/673/64/-120/-3/0/0
Only I want to do that even more to the point its ridiculous. But even with that map it would not be feasible for the maker of it to post all the users who made things for it.
With the amount I want to use I am not going to post a 5 page long or even possibly longer credit list. I already put 2 thousand schematics in it. I could not even tell you who made most of them.

Well, do whatever you want. Don't expect to post it on this website though, as you're only allowed to upload work made by yourself.

Anyways, a person has the right to release his work or not. There are hundreds of maps already released by map makers. If you can't find a map suitable to host your adventure map/etc, make one that is. Then you can release it for others to use as-well

This has gone SO off topic

Well I would actually say I didn't make most of the buildings. I am making a city so big no one would believe any one person ever made all the buildings.
With me I don't need credit. If someone wants to give credit great but I don't expect it. If I say went on a server and seen something I made I would not be upset not getting credit. I would just be happy someone valued something I made so much they used it.
But really back on to topic if someone makes a map of say a natural valley. If you upload it of course someone is going to make something on it. If someone makes maps and wants people not to make things on it why even upload it at all?

You don't make anything? Then you're not contributing ANYTHING so you have NO oomph against not giving credit. So if you post ANYTHING like this, I'm gonna love it when we all flag it down.
Keep a bloody list of the creators?

well you talking about changes...
you don't change anything about a build when u place it in mcedit next to another..
get your facts straight...
for that what you talking about you don't need a map made by someone. but when u use aquaducts d citys someone else made, then it's stolen.

I meant I take a map and I build the huge city. If I used an island for the basic shape someone made and remake 70% it is not stolen. What is wrong with you people way to high strung.
Futhermore I already seen a map posted that did'nt get flagged and it has about 200 schematics in it and it was never flagged. I am not going to keep a big long list of up loaders. Also making a city even with pre made buildings takes work to look right.
Also I do changes to the buildings to make it all flow together so it looks good. I don't understand what peoples problems are. Anything I made you can use and I would not care. That is why I upload things for people to use.

well i make custom terrains by myself and i let people using my map.
But i will flag any one who uses my map and does not give me credit. becuase making a hole map takes alot of effort to make. And it's not fair to throw a few structures on it and call it yours.. and avmf8, well so if you don't give credit to the people you just stole everything.. because anyone can make a nice map by putting just schematics together...

I just said I don't if I made massive changes. IF say I took your island and made a huge wall around it put the water higher had water falls going into huge aqueducts going to massive cities and made a huge mountain in the middle. That is so much of a change that not much of the original is still left at that point.
Now if someone just plunks down a few buildings and gives no credit then that is lame.
Now if someone just plunks down a few buildings and gives no credit then that is lame.
That's an awful point of view and is plagerism. (Don't know how to spell it). You always have to give credit no matter how big or small the list of people is/ the changes you've made.
Example:
1000 people on a server build city. You download and add a few more. Don't credit them.
1000:3 You are small and you should give credit.
Credits:
1000 people on the SexyCraft server.
---------------
In short: Always give credit.

or they could name the one who they got the download from if its on pmc
you cant with what I am doing. I intend on making the map contain 10 thousand schematics. It already contains 2 thousand. I have right now 2 thousand more I have not added yet and download more when I find structures I think will fit in the city. I want it to look like a proper city and have at least sections have buildings with the same sort of look.
IF you made so many changes it makes it a new creation you should not have to give credit. If someone uses something of mine in that manner I don't expect them to credit me. IT would not even bother me. Unless the person downloaded my work changed what it was made of in MCEdit then uploaded it with no credit given.
Also common plagiarism? Really you are going to call it that? That is going way to far. Also common would you take the time to note then right down thousands of user names?

That would get flagged as it is all made of many different people's builds and u just get the credit because you put them together, that is unfair to the people who built those structures, if you were allowed to do that, who wouldn't?
I was under the impression people make maps with no structures to make things with. Oh and if someone does not want me to use something I use it anyway. When I do something to a map I download I change allot of things in it.
I only give credit if I did small changes to a project someone made. Or if its impossible to credit them all. I have been downloading and adding skyscrapers to this big city I am making. It already contains 1000 buildings made by others.
I can't exactly give them all credit the list would be too long.
