Fur Tutorials?

Hello everyone! I'm working on my entry for the Official Planet Minecraft Desert Skin Contest, and was wondering if anyone had any good resources for how to do fur well in skins.
I've never been the best at drawing fur anyways, but I have no idea how to do it in a skin. I have a really cool idea for how to incorporate it into my skin, so I want to be able to do a good, realistic fur. I could improvise it, but I want this to be on the same level as my last contest entry (which won 17th place!), so I need this to be really professional.

EDIT: If you find full tutorials, link to them, otherwise just leave your advice. Specifically, for my skin I'm going to be using it as a fur pelt that my character will be wearing, not as full body fur.
