Can anyone help me or explain how to remove the transparent portions on the side of the texture? I'd like it to be a solid black where the transparencies are.

This is your problem; it looks like you resized the picture, therefore the editor had to make up for lost space and added the transparent parts I circled in this picture. If you have the original, I would use that, because the transparent colors are around the entire texture. I can fix it for you if you post the original, and I'll take a look at it.
