Custom Structures in 1.11.2?

While looking through the Minecraft 1.11.2.jar file structure, I found a folder called "structures" with a bunch of NBT schematics for various in-game structures. I tried to edit the End City - Ship file using an NBT editor, but it seemed to have no effect in game. Are these files actually used and customizable using resource packs, or are they redundant, like the loot tables?
