You'd better look up a "how to make a minecraft texture pack" tutorial on youtube, most people use gimp or paint.net to demonstrate, it'd be far easier and more helpful than trying to read through a text tutorial
How do I bring up the blocks in the irst place?
When opening a picture in GIMP (or make a new one), you first want to edit the layer size and canvas size (if it's not what you want). These can be done in the "image" and "layer" tabs. Use the pencil tool to do pixels. The shortcut is hitting "n". You must set the size to 1 (obviously). To erase, select the eraser tool and toggle "Hard edge". The same as the pencil, make the size 1. Those are the basics you need to know.
