I'm working on a de-lag texture pack. It is supposed to reduce lag. Some people may not like the textures, but it still works! If your minecraft lags alot, try this texture pack. It is not ready yet, but I am working on it all the time.

No it doesn't decrease lag but 64 and up textures will decrease lag.
On my experience, I think it raises frame rate because of the colors. I've got a laggy computer. If i use the pvpzone texture pack (server texture pack) it's very laggy. But if I use this, I see that the fps raises. I hope for some downloads . It's not ready yet.
So would a silverfish lag the game more than a cow?
Yes, but you're overestimating the effect of texturing. It is really easy for a video card to perform texturing.
You can render a single texture at a scale of 1000 times (so that the texture is effectively repeating 1000 times on a single quad) and it will not decrease in speed.
The GPU renders textures in such a way that this is not an issue. Lag is more dependent on the amount of polygons and not on texture sizes.

Actually, lower texture packs can reduce lag, some people use 4x4 texture packs because of bad computers, because as it is at 16x, it has to render 256 pixels per block as it is, when it's 4 it loads much much less.
Lol paril i didn't know you were a scapegoat. And Anyway people aready made a lot of these texture packs
Textures are very very very very low-cost on a video card. There will be almost no difference between 64x64 and 1x1.
MC doesn't use mipmapping or any other similar technology by default. It is possible that higher textures will cost more to render, but the change will be negligible.

The thing is, texturepacks cannot reduce lag. That is a myth.
I think what the author meant was that the texture could increase frame rate. I have seen 8x8, 4x4, and even 1x1 textures that greatly improve frame rate due to the low count of pixels Minecraft has to load.
