I can see what Sam is saying. I'm the Syclone he was referring to. I've only recently uploaded my first texture pack here (in my sig) its been a lot of work and there is still a lot to go. It reached 30,000 downloads in its first month and is looking to be quite popular. I put this down to the amount of time and effort i've put in. I've been putting in around 5-8hrs a day/night everyday for 8 months and i'm only 65% roughly in completion. If you put it in those terms that is not an amount of time that many/any would give to one person for nothing/little.

On another note i have turned down 3-4 private requests and these people have discussed with me figures similar to the above estimates and more but i have had to turn them all down as there is simply not enough time in the day.

It would be far more sensible/realistic to use an existing pack and maybe see if the artist will make some changes and additions to give some identity to your server. I'm working with a server on this basis as its all i can offer. Also bear in mind a proper HD pack (not some google images collection) takes much longer than a 16x pack so again think about just what you want from them and their time and what you can give in return.

The other way to look at it is if you find someone saying yes to your request you have to ask what quality the end result will be and if you will be satisfied with it. Then there's the question will they ever finish it at all due to not having the incentive to push through the many hours ahead.

I wish you luck with your request and server

(Before I do or say anything, I do hope you read my second post in its entirety. When you say "Let me stop you there," I inferred that that meant you hadn't read past that point. All of the really important arguments are after that, so you may want to reread it.)

I apologize, I lost my cool a bit back there. Let me go over my argument again, only this time a little clearer and with a level head. (Prepare for another very long-winded post.)

I am fully aware that I am by no means a talented artist. I am still improving, and judging by what I have seen from other artists I know with more experience, I have a long way to go still. I also do not expect to make any real money off of the texture pack that I'm making on my own time. However, it's when I'm making textures for someone else that the issue of payment arises.

When I'm working for someone else, my creativity is somewhat stunted, as I've noticed recently while working for some modders. The decrease in my artistic freedom is somewhat minuscule, since the people I'm working with seem to really like my work, though their influence is still there. I would imagine that my creativity would be hindered even more if I were to be catering to someone else's styles and needs.

Basically, when I'm making my own textures, it's for fun, and I enjoy it. But when I'm making textures for someone else, it soon becomes work.

When I presented that rate, I was not trying to present myself as a professional artist negotiating fees. I was trying to prove by example that what the OP is asking is not going to come cheap. I, personally, have no real knowledge of how rates for graphic artists are calculated, as I have no real exposure to that market, so I presented my best guess. And, judging by similar arguments I've seen in the past (mostly on the Minecraft Forums) where real professional artists were involved, I really was suggesting a very low price.

Now, after all this has been blown way out of proportion, I have come to the conclusion that, like seemingly every other thread like this, the OP will either select one of the texture packs suggested, or completely disappear. If this is the case, this whole argument is entirely pointless. So, yeah.

Also, side note; you'd be very surprised to find out how many popular texture pack artists do in fact make a profit, and how many of them have professional graphic arts careers outside of Minecraft.

samohtjAssuming an average hourly rate of $7.70 U.S. (my state's minimum wage), that tops off at $5559.40. As you can see, I was charging a little low.

Let me stop you there.

This isn't a job. Making textures isn't something you should expect to make a living off of. If you do, you seriously need to reevaluate your goals in life. Sure, you may have a decent texturepack going - But you're nowhere near as skilled as some people out there, and most of them don't even make a profit. You will never find someone who is going to pay more than a couple hundred dollars, for a Minecraft texturepack to be made.

I will do it for free. I hate it when people are saying they want thousands of dollars to make texture pack because its not that hard. Sure it takes time but that time is maybe worth 100 dollars since most people have fun texturing!

No Need For That Comment At All, if you don't want to jog on other people may well want to, people always feel like they need to be better than other people on the internet

Here is an example of some of my work.

For a full, customized texture pack for your own personal use, assuming every texture needs to be done, at a resolution of 32x, I'm going to round that price to about $3,500 U.S. (minimum). Still interested?

You shouldn't go around expecting people to make you a whole pack. It just takes too much work. Either find one that already exists and the creator will let you use, or make your own.

Did you realize that you are the only texture pack artist that is always saying the same over exagurated (<- not sure if spelled right ) price?

Let me break this down for you.

All in all, Minecraft has 609 textures.
Click to reveal
252 blocks (5 animated)
203 items (2 animated)
49 mobs
15 from /misc (enchantment glow, biome shaders, etc.)
15 from /item (chests, signs, boats, etc.)
24 GUIs
1 font
7 from /environment (sun, moon, etc.)
26 separate paintings
14 armors (including charged creeper and Wither armor)
2 from /achievement
pack.png

Now, assuming that you take 1 hour for blocks and items (3 hours for animations), 2 hours for each mob (average), 3 hours per GUI, 3 hours for the font, and 1 hour for everything else, that puts you at about 722 hours. Assuming an average hourly rate of $7.70 U.S. (my state's minimum wage), that tops off at $5559.40. As you can see, I was charging a little low.

As I just demonstrated, quality texture packs take a long-ass time to make. The calculations I made were not factoring in things like CTM and animations, which could add tremendously to the cost. And, adding to that, I am a complete amateur. I have no background as a professional artist, no references, and no special training. Full-time professional artists charge way more than minimum wage.

The point I'm trying to make is, when you're making a texture pack for someone else, it will very quickly change from "fun" to "work." And if I'm going to work for someone, I expect to get something in return. I do not exaggerate rates, I tone them down. Like I said, I have no background in professional digital art, so I don't know exactly what professionals get paid, but I do know that they hardly ever do anything for free.

When you ask someone for a service, such as creating a full texture pack, you're not asking for a gift. You're asking to enter into an exchange. Most artists do this as a hobby, so we have no problem providing our work to the public free of charge. But if you want a pack customized to your tastes, for your use only, you are going to have to give a little back.

The reason that I am the only one who posts these "exaggerated prices" (which, by the way, I'm not) is because everyone else who offers the service for free has no idea what they're getting into. I, personally, have been working on a texture pack for almost four months now, and the blocks are not even half done. Texturing is hard, and it takes a certain amount of skill to be able to create something worthwhile, and that skill is a precious commodity.

I'll make you a promise, Mr. Echin44. If you can show me even one instance where a person requested a full texture pack, customized to their tastes, and the request was filled fully and free of charge, then I will never make a comment of the sort I made earlier ever again. However, since this most certainly has never happened, I will continue to inform people that if you want a service provided to you, you have to provide something in return. That's how a little thing I like to call "the economy" works.

My god, I cannot believe I just typed all that. What am I doing with my life?

Having things in return is nice and I know that you might want to make money with your textures but I think the problem with me is that I am only 15 and don't have anything that I could get paid through like PayPal and the fact that most of you guys are American a and I am German €~$. Also what you just typed was only rule for one type of texture packs. Making a cartoon pack takes really less time. One block = 10-30minutes.
Btw I think the guy wanted a Photo Realism Texture Pack. Those are little work since many people just get the textures from google and slightly edit them to make them seemless.
The reason why I don't agree with you is that 3500 dollars just sounds too much for me and I think that you would do a texture pack for even 1000$.

My terms are not everybody's terms. You can charge whatever you want, be it $1000 or $0. Don't follow my example in that particular area, since I have no real experience there.

I was just reading a post on MCF by Rayvolution, creator of SixtyGig (which I believe is still in the top 5 hot texture packs right now). His pack is undeniably cartoony in style, though he says that he regularly spends over 9 hours on each block. So, it's not really the style that makes it take so long, it's the dedication and detail put into it (which is basically what he and Syclone were talking about). Low-res textures (meaning 16x and lower) take a very short time to make in comparison to the larger resolutions that I and everyone I know work with.
