Edit: i have tried, and tried again at making a decent looking texture pack, but have failed and rage quit several times. <long rage letter here> so any tips you could provide on how to make one, or make it look better would be greatly appreciated

Well your first texture pack can be bad however you can always use tweaks and fixes to make it better. Then ask your friends what they think! if they say yes or no remember their giving you constructive criticism. Their is a few posts about how to make a good texture pack that might help you out. And even if people don't like it try again! -Wers2000
well first you should be more clear in your post im assuming you are talking about texture packs with the mention of paint.net. You should also share examples of the textures you have made even if they are bad so that people can provide constructive criticism. I recommend (if you are not doing so already) to get the idea ready in your mind. Do some planning. It's always good to be sure of what you want to make, get a theme in mind and stick with it the whole way through.
Hey, done raging and decided i'd tweak the UI a bit, please let me know what you think (sorry about having to go through Photobucket, i have not clue how to upload to these forums)

Edit: texture pack health, armor (etc etc) coming soon

This is obviously the more expensive way to go, but if you want to get into texture packs and art to get some really nice products, I'd get one of those computer drawing pads. You can find them really cheap on Overstock. Just be patient. We all start somewhere.
Edit your OP, I would provide more information so some of us know what you're talking about. I actually had to read the comments before I realized you're making a texture pack. My only advice is just to practice and keep trying until you keep getting better...
thanks, i wrote that and never looked at it again (while still in a rage <.< >.> ) it's been edited to be more clear
2 of the 3 UI packs i have planned are out, i would very much like opinions and/or pointers for improvement.
