Marooned [Roleplay Thread]
Marooned
It is approximately 18:30pm. Dusk is at 18:50, and Dawn at 06:00. A snowstorm is approaching. It is -32°C outside the facility, -27°C within the facility, and 25°C in sealed areas of the compound with access to heating.
This information will be updated as the roleplay goes on.
As you climb the snowy slope to the main entrance of the facility, it being the only viable shelter, the snowstorm begins to pick up. Staying out here is not an option, despite the facility being completely unexplored and rather dark, it's better than freezing to death. As you look across the horizon, you think you see something white moving in the distance, however after blinking it seems to have disappeared. Must be your imagination.
Map:

Quinstep fumbles with his binoculars to observe the flaming wreckage of the Western Sun, Maria standing next to him with her face sterile of emotion. Finally able to maintain a grip in the cold winds, he manages to spot a few survivors pull themselves from the shattered corpse of the ship, others... Well, others aren't so lucky. Instinctively, he ushers Maria back into building "Come on now, honey. Back inside... I think we may have guests" he says in his usual soft tone of voice. Maria obeys, each movement made more obvious by the quiet noises of the gears inside her whirling in and out of position. He reaches his sealed off office, opening the large door with a grunt of exertion, letting out a blast of the stored hot air. Shutting it behind him, he removes his coat and dusts some snow off of Maria's head, sitting her in the corner so that she may continue doodling in her art book. Quinstep observes the various monitors before him, making note of weather, time, and the activities of the facility's inhabitants. "They're not going to make it.." he says quietly, in a desperate tone as he watches from his nest of electronics.

(( Not sure where to begin. ))
Derek cursed for the fifth time since the ship had gone down. Karma was awful, and it finally caught up to him. It was a horrible day to wear his Armani suit. And a lot of good his personal weapon was going to do unless he wanted to shoot himself. Worst of all, it seemed that it was starting to snow. Violently. From the distance he spied a large building; A shelter and refuge, if he could just make it up the mountain.
Derek decided that this wasn't the way he wanted to die. So he started walking toward the slope, ready to do whatever it took to survive.

(( So in advance, What exactly is the building like? Like what does it look like inside, what sort of floorplan does it have. That kind of stuff. ))
Guruk awoke groggily, the first thing he noticed is that his head hurt worse stun baton to the forehead. Then he noticed that the metal he is laying on is hot, very hot. He forced himself to open his eyes, taking in that he was surrounded by burning wreckage and debris. Guruk stood up and looked over himself for injuries, after a few seconds of looking... He realized that he was only looking through his right eye. He moved his hand towards his left eye, after feeling the touch of warm liquid, and something cold and hard on his fingertips, he understood the grim truth. His eye had been stabbed by a piece of shrapnel. He didn't know if the injury was fatal, but he did know that if the shrapnel didn't kill him, staying in the wreck would. Guruk made his way slowly through the fiery destruction of the Western Sun. Once he was finally out, he noticed what he hoped was a base at the top of a large slope.
(( And to be honest not sure if shrapnel to the eye is deadly, if you think it would be, let me know and I will change it. ))

"T-There's one of them!" exclaims Quinstep in a somewhat joyous tone, quickly throwing on his coat and heading out of his office, across an old barren hallway, to lean out a window with a megaphone. "You there! Survivor! We've got the stuff to help you in here, but just.. Hang on.. Are you armed?" the old man shouts out of the window, thankfully despite the heavy weather you'd still manage to make out the message alright. Maria tugs on Quinstep's coat sleeve and points to her watch. He nods to her and sends he back to the room to start dinner, once more he leans out, delivering a final message. "Look sir! It's just me and my daughter in here, we can help you out. Come to floor 3, room 24a! But uh.. Be careful on your way up here..." Quinstep shouts before leaning back inside the building, shutting the window, and heading back to his hideout.
(( The hideout/office ))

(( And to answer your question Northern, I'm working on setting up some sort of floor plan, but up until then we'll just have to wing it, so to speak. Imagine it as having a layout similar to an office building, lots of large open rooms with cubicles, now long deserted. There are labs in one section, lifts linking the floors, a small vehicle bay, a canteen, and some other areas that can be explained in detail if needed. The inside is mostly clogged with frozen snow, no signs of life save for the odd footstep. ))

At the bottom of the slope Guruk could have sworn he heard a voice in the distance. The most he could understand was something about help, hanging, and an arm. But when he looked up to where the voice was coming from, he saw nothing. Guruk shrugged it off and continued walking towards the slope. He was stopped when he felt blood running down his left cheek. But was torn away from the it when he heard yelling again, this time he could understand the voice. Sounds like I may still have a chance of surviving. He thought with renewed hope. Then the blood began to drip down onto his shoulder. I need to keep my blasted eye from bleeding, and it will be ten times harder with this chunk of metal in my eye! Guruk thought grimly. He put his hand up to the metal shard, but he didn't pull it out. He was afraid. After standing there a few seconds trying to get the courage to pull, Guruk lowered his hand. Instead he tore off some cloth from his shirt and did his best to create a makeshift eye-patch around the shrapnel. After that, he began trying to climb the intimidating hill of snow.
Someone was shouting at him now, something about a room, but he didn't catch the number. Perhaps there were people here, maybe a whole civilization. Derek quickly started climbing.
Eventually he stopped climbing when he was half way and turned to look down. It didn't look good, only a few people were alive from the crash.
All the better to get up, I may be able to get some Traumatic experience money. Derek thought silently as he continued the climb.

(( So uhm.. How high is this slope? Like how long do I RP Guruk climbing it? ))
From his desk, Quinstep begins to furiously type away at his computer, drawing up several new windows and control panels onto his wall of monitors. Tapping into the building's intercom, he sets up a repeatable message to any else who may wander out of the wreckage. After a short metallic screech, it begins to play to all heading towards the building.
"Hear me.. Survivors! My name is Harold Quinstep! I offer shelter.. and food! Come quickly, it is dangerous outside of the walls! Remain armed, and remain safe!"
At that, he types a few more command lines and launches a small probe to scout out the area directly outside the doors. Leaning backwards and swivelling on his chair he places a hand on Maria's shoulder, "Maria, sweetheart. Where's the door control panel?" he asks in a soft tone.
Maria blinks once and kneels down under the desk, finding a large plastic board with plenty of switches and lights. Without unplugging any of cords plugged into it's back, she hands it to her surrogate father. Then, with the flick of a single switch, the building's front doors slide open after a few seconds of alarm.
As you press onwards, hearing both Quinstep's repeated message and the blaring alarm, another noise breaks into the cacophony. A strange howl, that sounds more man than beast, echoes throughout the small plateau and around the snow white landscape. As you quickly scan your surroundings, nothing seems out of place, and the howls grown distant, dying down after a minute or so. Best get inside quickly.

(( I know it's probably a small shape, but do you expect a greasy con man to be in shape? ))
Derek was gasping when he finally reached the top, not to mention his suit coat getting quite damp.
"They better have alcohol in here." He muttered as he followed Trimble and advanced into the facility.

Quinstep's face appears on several monitors throughout the hallways of the building, he squints, adjusts his glasses, and addresses Trimble and Derek, "Oh thank heavens! You made it! Right, let me just fiddle with these controls and.."
As his voice trails off you notice a door a few feet from the entrance open. "That's the old guard post, you might find some heavier arms in there, for the wendigo that is" he explains, gesturing to a small room which has several racks of automatic plasma rifles. "Once you're equipped, head down the hall, and take a left, climb the staircase, and I'll be there. Please don't uh, don't shoot me" he says in a rather afraid tone.

Derek frowns, and, ignoring Trimble, turns off toward the door with the weapons. "Hm..Never seen these before..Either they're ancient or advanced." He thought to himself before selecting a sleek plasma rifle.
Down the hall, take a left, and climb the stairs. He thought to himself as he began to follow the directions and slowly climbed the staircase. It was so cold..

Quinstep spins on his heel, nearly losing his balance, and aims a small firearm at you, startled by your presence. However, as he realises it's one of the survivors he'd seen on his monitors, he lowers it quickly and rushes towards you, trudging through the snow on the ground. "C'mere boy, we've got heat aplenty in the office" he says as he throws a thick wool blanket over your shoulders and ushers you towards the open door of his office. "Maria, dear! Brew some tea, or perhaps a coffee for the young gentleman here, uh, what'd you drink, mister?" he asks as he ushers you into the rather warm room, closing the door slightly as he follows you into his office.
"Tea." Derek said hoarsely, shuffling into the room." He stood bewildered and looked around him before rubbing his eyes, and then pulling the wool blanket tighter around him.
"Where am I? Is this some sort of outpost? Whens the next flight back to Earth?!" He asked, his words coming out in a jumble.

Quinstep and Maria exchange a look of confusion, though he gestures you to a seat and sits down in his own leather armchair. "Son, there are no flights out of here, this rock was abandoned 'round nine years ago. This place is known, or rather was, as Ranotech Research Labs, we studied, built, and tested hardware for the Yamase family, until they cut out funding and well, left us for dead. But that don't matter right now, just get some rest, warm up by the heater and all that, you hungry at all?" the old man explains, occasionally leaning to look at a monitor for other survivors.

The staircase leads downwards into near darkness, each step covered in broken tile, with small mounds of snow at the corners. You reach a landing which moans slightly as you step foot onto it, though after a moment of freezing in place to not provoke it further, you're sure it won't make another noise. Instead, you hear a strange groan from the darkness further down the staircase. The cry is similar to those which echoed throughout the snow dunes outside not long before, though this time, the noise is much closer.

Cold. That was what James felt when he woke up. Not just cold. Freezing. As he opened his eyes and got up from the ground, he looked around and felt terrified. He didn't know where he was, and the only bit of civilization he could see were some lights in the distance. Wiping away a few tears of fear, he started walking towards the lights. James felt like it was getting colder, but nonetheless kept walking, occasionally walking around bits of wreckage that were in his way.
Derek slowly sat down and looked around bewildered.
"So..I'm stuck here?" He asked, in a pained tone. "There's no way out?"
Derek already knew the answer, and he went into silence. How am I going to get home? All my funds not even worth anything on this snowy planet.
"Wait!" He protested, suddenly smiling. "There were pieces that were working on the ship! Maybe we can go salvage them later and make something or atleast try to get contact with Earth."

Spotting the source of the light, what looked to be a factory or facility of some sort, James walks around to try and find the entrance. Eventually, he does find it, and he enters. "Hello!?" He calls out, hoping that he is heard as he walks deeper into the facility.
"M-My boy, earth is lightyears away, thousands even. To set up a signal, well we'd need an engineer, of the mechanical kind. I can program something if we get the hardware working, but all my gear is only for short-range communication" Quinstep explains, grabbing his own mug of tea. "Perhaps.. Maybe, we could contact a passing ship, but for now, we should focus on helping other survivors, son" Quinstep says, poking his head out the door as he hears something.
"Anyone down there? Go down the hall, and take a left to head up the stairs! We got food and room aplenty" he calls, setting his mug down before leaving the room.
From the darkness at the bottom of the stairwell, a form begins to take shape, the source of the noises appears to be a creature of some sort. Leaning heavily on it's front legs, it resembles a gorilla in structure, though has no nose, and a gaping mouth. Most noticeably however is the large red stain on it's chest, and the bloody saliva that oozes from it's jaw. It barks twice, a strange noise that shoots fear into you. Slowly, it begins to climb the staircase.

The Wendigo

Walking along a hallway, James hears a voice giving directions, so he follows them. Climbing up a staircase, he hears what seems to be two loud barks. James whimpers in fear and climbs the staircase faster. Looking down, he sees what seems to be something white, and it was making it's way up the staircase. "T-There's a t-thing down there." James shouts up the staircase. "A b-big white thing." He continues his climb up the staircase.
(( Sorry for not posting :3 ))
Guruk was having trouble climbing the slope, he was in shape, but the blood loss was starting to have an effect on him. A few times he slipped in the snow, but finally he made it to the entrance. He managed to stumbled into the snow covered building, looking around to try and figure out where he was supposed to go. But he was shook out of his investigation by two intense barks from what seemed to be below him.

"It's a possibility though..We should do it soon, maybe after twenty four hours." Derek said, brightening up. "I'm a wealthy man, if you don't mind me saying that, and possibly, just possibly they would send a ship if they knew I was here." He smiled his signature smile then turned to get some tea, but then heard the odd noises.
His smile faded instantly, and his instinct told him to go for his gun.."What was that?" He asked, his voice now shaky again.
His smile faded instantly, and his instinct told him to go for his gun.."What was that?" He asked, his voice now shaky again.
Eyes opening, he looked around him and saw white. A thin layer of snow had already covered him. He raised his head and saw why he felt some semblance of warmth, there was some fire still blazing around him, no doubt the last blaze before the snow snuffed it all out. He rose and saw a dark shape looming in the difference, far too angular to be natural. He gathered his coat around him to stave off the cold and picked up his bag that was still near him. Knowing that he had a choice between keeping a fire going here and eventually freezing or risking the building he took out his IR scanner and pointed it at the building, looked like there was some kind of warmth, so he took the risk and headed toward the distant shadow.
(( Breath darn you! ))
Guruk was guessing that the bark hadn't come from common a dog, he quickly grabbed for the stun baton at his waist. Flicking the switch, the baton began to emit a faint humming along with a blue glow. Guruk began walking down a hallway towards what looked like two staircases. Guruk was assuming that whatever was making that noise was down the staircase to the left, which seemed to go down to the lower parts of the building, but he didn't think his small baton would be able to defeat whatever beast was down there. He began walking up the other staircase slowly, keeping a watch over his shoulder to make sure nothing was coming up the darkness below.
