Alright so I've seen the massive builds, and the moderate builds (and even gave a few suggestions based on budgets myself), but now I pose an interesting task to look upon.
How cheap of a computer can you build?
With this request, technically there's no budget, but cut as many corners as possible!
The budget includes the entire desktop, including the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
You can't cheat and use a netbook here. I want to see a possible built desktop.
The computer in question must be able to run the latest version of Ubuntu. For anyone who doesn't know, I'll post Ubuntu's minimum system requirements.
700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)
512 MiB RAM (system memory)
5 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
I'm interested in seeing what this community can come up with.

This is the cheapest build I could get on PCPartPicker. I hit the ascending price sort button for everything except the CPU, because the cheapest CPUs there didn't have integrated graphics.

All I'm recommending right now is that you change that power supply to anything but that, Diablotek power supplies WILL die.
I'm sure I would find an alternate psu in the future. I might be able to cut the cost even further if I can find something that uses less wattage.
All you have to do is change the power supply so it doesn't blow up.

Forget cheap, you can get parts of that spec for free.
People are always chucking out ancient pc's with low end specs. I've got loads of this old junk- in my opinion its only good for gold/copper scrap and pretty crummy when it comes down to running ubuntu.

Just buy Rasberry PI, duck tape and a desktop cabinett. Then tape the PI into the cabinett, and vola, you got a nice and powerful computer. And it is desktop size.
What's the point of getting a cheap build?Its going to die within a year or two.Also even if those are minimum requirements,I highly doubt it would run it smoothly.

700mhz still exists, it's just that hardware manufacturers don't see a need to make a processor so weak anymore (it's usually 1ghz+ to support Windows OS) unless it's an ARM powered machine like a cheap smartphone.
But seriously, no one has a suggestion for a cheap desktop build that can run Ubuntu?

Okay, here is how you build it.
first, cut out cardboard into a rectangular prism. This will act as your beautiful case.
second, cut out some green fabric and stick it in there. This is your motherboard.
Third, throw a brick in there. this is your fan.
fourth, throw another brick in there. this is your oh-so-marvelous processor.
fifth, stick a banana in the video card slot that is so nicely cut out on the motherboard. This is your super ultra uber graphics card.
There you go. It will run minecraft at approximately 1700 fps.

This is only possible in the future! This technology is really advanced, only aliens can do it. You might also want to put some soup in it, that's your liquid cooler. If the graphic card gets squishy, then don't touch it, the liquid cooler is just doing it's job! This extra tip enhances the frame rate to 2000 FPS

Then add your 40 000K camera. Stick a googly eye on your chalk monitor and there you have it.
This can only run Minesweeper at 20 FPS, not Minecraft at 1700.

This thing can't run Ubuntu, the processor can't even "run" at 1hz
By no budget do you mean like $1000 plus? Or do you want me to just try to make the cheapest build I can?

Try a ChromeBook, although a bit difficult it is actually possible to get a version of Ubuntu running on there. but ChromeOS is on there by default, not really my thing but hey.

Rasberry Pi would indeed fit the bill, but I was hoping to see an actual desktop build, and not something prebuilt together.
