i didnt know what it was until my friend told me. that was one of the most interesting days of my life. mostly because he told me to look up "slender man" too
The cake isn't actually a lie. It's after the end credits. XP
The cake is a lie in terms of what glados told us. She said that she would give us cake if we completed the test, instead she would've killed us!
megustaQUESOfroghogWaldder_2002I bet 99% of the people that say this, don't even know where it comes from. It is a sentence written on a wall by a crazy person in a 2007 XBOX/Play Station game called "Portal". The whole point of the phrase, is to tell about an Easter Egg implanted into the game. You do a thing called a "portal bunk" and you can eventually make it to the cake room. When you do so, you put the a Weighted Companion Cube on the cake, then you proceed through the normal storyline. When you finish the game without doing this, a robotic arm puts the candle on the cake out. If you do pull off the Easter Egg, the robotic arm will try to put the candle out, but, since the sequence isn't completed, it freezes the game and you have to reset the console you are playing on. If you knew this, good for you! If not, you now know where the oddly popular phrase originally came from.
this crazy man that you speak of is actually called the ratman. DOUG ratman.
RatTman. DOUG Rattman.
lol, two t's i guess
No one f*cking cares.
If nobody cared nobody would comment... Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I just realized I was watching videos from a review team that was hated by lots of people. I should really check the names before I watch the videos, shouldn't I? Oh, well.
I thought the phrase was said because GLaDOS promises cake but in reality there is no 'cake' or 'celebration' for completing the challenges. I don't think it applies to some cake glitch.
This. I dont see whats so hard to understand.
Moreover, I really hate those jokes/people who say things like the cake is a lie and i took an arrow to the knee, without even knowing from where it came from.

I found out what "then I took an arrow to the knee" meant a few days ago. I used to think, like all others, that it was ridiculous that taking an arrow to the knee would stop an adventurer. For those of you who don't know what it means, it means to get married.
I think you underestimate people who know about or have played portal. A lot of people know its from portal, I don't think I have met anyone who didn't know where it was from.
You mean the source engine? It's not just for HL2.
Well technically it is the HL2 Source Engine. Its the same thing.
The pie is the lie, not the cake Cakes Yummy (So is pie)

In the original portal on the PC GLaDOS repeatedly mentions that if you give up you will receive cake. The phrase comes from the fact of there being no cake or so everyone though.
Omg
Did you know....
.....The cake is a lie.

99% of all statistics are made up on the spot
GLaDOS does say, "First, you will be baked, and then there will be cake." This statement is actually intended to be correct. You ought to play the game to find out how.
I don't think the cake IS a lie I just think the cake is a pie.......
Wow. You're so wrong. No, it is not a reference to that. The entire game, the main antagonist, GLaDOS, promises you cake and a party, in reward for completing the various tests using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. You are correct that it was written on a wall by a crazy person, however you are so wrong about this. The "Crazy" person is warning the main character, Chell, that GLaDOS is lying to her, and that there is no cake. Thus, the cake is a lie. They're not eluding to that little glitch, they're quite honestly telling you that she is lying to you. And yes, that is just a glitch, not an easter egg. Welcome to cinematic in the HL Engine. They are rendered in real time, which is why the cube blocking the cake stops the game.
Yay, someone who understands the game AND the HL2 engine.
The cake is a lie, Indeed.
