if it's someone that's supposed to be a friend, I feel it's best to just cut them out of your life. Nobody needs jerk friends.
If it's someone at work, the professional thing to do is report them. I'd say to do similar if you're younger and have to deal with bullies at school instead of work.
Scummy lawmaker or politician? Vote them out, Challenge them when they start lying and trying to hurt people.
I see violence as a last resort, but if someone is physically trying to hurt you or your loved ones, you should do what you can to stop them, too. Just be careful, it may be good to learn proper self-defense.
