Is DDoSing illegal?

Well, today someone came on my server and started cussing with caps and everything so we muted him, then we kicked him, he wouldn't stop so we banned him. He then used another one of his hacked accounts and logged on pretending to be someone else. He asked my Co-Owner for Skype and he was suspicious. After he added him he said 'Give me one reason I shouldn't DDoS you right now and take down your internet' and he said this while I was speaking him on Skype. Then my Co-Owner left MC and on Skype it kept saying he went offline then he had internet connection problem. After 30 minutes later the DDoSing finally stopped and he used yet again ANOTHER hacked account to get on my server and he asked me and all my players that if I don't give him OP he will DDoS all of us. Is there anyway to report this? If there is, could anybody tell me how?

DDOS is cyberterrorism and it's illegal.
He can get fined for it.

So yeah, get his ip and report to hosting services.
Your friend's internet host. They will take it to next level.

It is illegal, however it's almost impossible to stop a DoS attack. What you can do is actually find out his ip, and DoS him. That would off course be illegal, however i doubt he would report you as he did it himself.

I am staff on a server that has had hundreds of DDoS threats, we have a good thing though. "If threats are made towards the server, we have the right to confirm your real name, phone number, address and post code"

Well what you can do is contact your host and ask your server ip to be changed, also try blocking his skype.

Anybody ever tried using a redirect? Make a host url using a service like https://www.dtdns.com/

mc.dtdns.com would be the new address that redirects to ???.???.???.???:?????
or whatever your ip is. That way when mc.dtdns.com gets ddosed shouldn't that go down leaving the original ip fine?

Not tested but in theory it might work.

Redirects unfortunately do not work. If you ping that specific redirect you can retrieve the actual IP. However, OP is talking about a direct IP pick-up through Skype, which can't be prevented unless you install a VPN or use a proxy.

It is illegal, and can that user can be jailed for 1-2 years; it is classified as terrorism. I am pretty sure however, that it was a DOS not a DDOS. I can help your co-owner be protected against ddosing if you let him contact me on Skype, or Steam.

Yes, because someone who figured out how to (D)Dos has not yet figured out what a proxy is.

Edit: Besides, IP banning does not mean he can still not (D)DOS you.

Possible Solution: Ask your friend if he has a dynamic IP, if so tell him to restart is router and not enter the server until the attacker is no longer on. If he has a static IP, tell him to call his Provider and ask them to reset his IP so that the DDos'er will no longer be able to attack him. As for the server, your host probably doesn't have and DDos protection so in saying that there isn't much you can do. And who wouldn't be stupid enough to have a proxy up whilst doing so, I'm guessing it's practically pointless to IP Ban him as he will just go under a different IP.

by restarting his router goes, tell him to umplug the power from it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. specifics,

I wish people would stop being so immature... this most likely wont work, but op him, then de-op him. First make him promise to stop if you do op him. If he has any sense or manner (which he most likely doesn't) then he'll stop after you op him then de-op him. Or just ban him, the next account, and so on and so forth. again this probably wont work. Do you have and type of server host like Enjin? If so, you can report him to them, and they will report him to the atouritys,or try to get a Ddos block, because it is very, very illegal

And If it's against his home internet it's probally a UTP flood or something like that. The only way to stop it basically is get a server that can withstand it, or put some sort of proxy between the connections and the server. 2 great anti-ddos are http://www.cloudflare.com/ and http://assetgateway.com/, assetgateway is for MC servers only, cloudflare can be used on anything, like home internet. Unfortunate;y they are not cheap

You can't just "ban" the ddosers IP unless he's using a sort of mincraft account connection spam. And if he is smart, which he appears to he, he's probably running the ddos through a proxy or some random IP.

Obtain his IP via /whois if you are using Essentials.

Write that down and report him to the federal government.

PlanetMinecraft has nothing to do with other people's servers, so you can't just report him to someone on here.

And DDoSing probably is illegal becuase of what someone said above, and since you do ofcourse spam someone's internet or something down when doing it, he doing that just because he isn't getting OP sounds immature.

Suggestion: IP-Ban the person DDoSing.
And take him off your Skype.

He never mentioned Planet Minecraft having anything to do with this. This is just a plain and simple rude and ignorant comment, no disrespect intended.

DDOS attacks are illegal, but hard to stop without the proper hardware. If the ddos is against you're MC server try assetgateway.com.

"As indicated under the “Ethics Act” of the Internet, all activities that disrupt the intended use of the internet are considered illegal."

Yes, DDoSing can result in 5 years in prison and/or up to $250,000 in fines.
