i was wondering what is the point of miencraft? i've been playing it for long enough so i started to realising it's all pointless

It's a sandbox styled game. Do whatever you want to do in the game (which is building and/or surviving).
Try joining some servers and play with other people since single player can get a little bit dull.
Or try throwing mods in to spice up your life.
If you happen to get bored of the game, then move on.

Adventure update* as notch made clear several times in his blogs. It is going to flesh out the game and give it something more like a goal, with improved dungeons and hopefully boss battle. ^.^
