Server advertsing
I've been trying to advertise a server I've worked hard on for months, and nobody ever joins. Why?

The biggest thing to remember is you're not going to get a ton of players to join overnight. My advice is to create pages for your server on as many Minecraft server websites as you can, and bump or ping them as much as you can. Once you slowly gain some players, they will tell their friends and word will slowly spread. I have a server and the hardest part is definitely getting players, but as long as you have a unique server with friendly staff, you'll get players eventually. Just bump your submission as much as possible, especially here on PMC. Hope this helps
Yeah, just try to be awesome to your existing members and occasionally (once a month, depending on the situation) remind them to ask their friends to give your server a shot.
Don't stealmy picture and update it to 1.4.5 is easy to get the plugins and bukkit.
1.4.2 servers rarely get new players though. These servers may have retained old players who knew the server would not be updating.
Update your server and you will get a lot more players since many people do not know how to mod or backdate their miencraft.jar.

They can, I see lots of 1.4.2 servers being advertised with lots of players.
Update to 1.4.5............ you wont get ANY players with 1.4.2
1.4.5 is bug fixes and thats really it, so it's stupid of me to update to it (though I am in the slow process of collecting the 1.4.5 versions of my plugins to update)

I have a site where the IP is told (only giving the site to weed out the type players who join to grief and raid then leave)

I gave a site my potential players can go to get the IP (help filter out the ones who join once and never come back, or come to grief and raid then leave forever) Thats actually what lead to me getting banned from the chat, some kids accused me of getting payed for traffic on a free forum site (lmao)
What kind of server is it? Perhaps it's just not popular because it's more of an unorthodox concept, such as a griefing-free raid server.
Everything that is popular (raiding, griefing, factions, being 24/7) It's 1.4.2 for a few more weeks, but 1.4.2 isn't out of date, I still see lots of 1.4.2 servers out there with lots of people.
Advertising doesn't mean you will get players. It means you are showing people that your server is up, however; many others are posting about their servers aswell and what is to stop a "person" to look at yours not anyone elses, therefor; use advertising that will catch the "person(s)" eye, give them a reason to stop and look at yours, for instance, Have an amazing banner that will lead people to think "hey this server looks nice" and once they click the banner have nice pictures of spawn and other nice "builds" you may or may not have. If not, or if you have bad building skill, resort to "McSchematics" and load things into your world (Extreamly high quality buildings) then as i said you will have flashy things to show people who are looking for a good server.

Nothing works... I've tried and tried for months on end, and just today I got banned from the chat for swearing (long story) all over trying to defend my server and my site I made for it in hope of getting players..
Perhaps people dont like the staff/server.
