Thoughts on a cloud storage system
I've been thinking about setting up my own cloud storage service (I have the software and hardware, or at least enough to get started), and selling it to people, and I was wondering what you think; any feedback is appreciated, whether you think it's a complete waste of effort or you think it has potential.
If you like the idea, keep looking at this thread; any ideas/info/progress will be posted here.
Things I want you to answer:
1. Would you buy cloud storage for $4/TB/month? Are there any cheaper services?
2. How much free storage should you get?
3. Any ideas on the architecture (i.e should I use RAID 1, hadoop, etc.)
Current plan (not set in stone): Make a free hsoting site that makes revenue off mostly ads.

But how are you going to get the trust of users to store their files on your servers, as a starting company?
Every company has a start. MediaFire, Mega, Skype, Dropbox are all cloud.
They are also more or less secure, and not run out of someone's house. I wouldn't trust my sensitive data on someone's insecure servers.
OP wouldn't be able to compete with any cloud storage provider such as OneDrive/Dropbox.
He'd have to spend hundreds/thousands to even create basic infrastructure for it, as well as have an extremely fast connection to serve and accept files to users.

Good idea but $4 for a month? If someone stops paying do they lose access to their online storage, like a public locker system?
I think you should do 50 cents for each MB they use up/upload, but not make it like a monthly payment. Bassicly, they want to upload a music file that is 140 MB. To upload that file, the system requires them to pay $1.40. They can have a "bank account" on the site where they can store money to skip payment later or have an automatic link to your credit card and will automatically make the payment, saving the user the trouble of paying on the spot. If you want to be cheap, you could always do like 1 MB = 5 cents, or less.

Hmm, I'll consider ditching the monthly payment idea. I mean, I could make it free, as long as the ad revenue is enough. This isn't even for profit, I'm okay as long as I don't lose money.
Also, as a side note, 5 cents per MB was a reasonable price back in around 2002. I'll consider a kind of "charge by upload" kind of deal.

1TB for $37 is pretty good.
50?!!? I would probably get it to $500 by that time
sell? Mega gives us 50gb for free, that is already alot for the average user.
It's for those who need 1TB+ for, say, backup. Plus, I'll also be giving free storage, I'm just not sure how much.
