Also for easier entity textures and modeling I would recommend blockbench.

I have one newbie question, is there another good programme like BlockBench that works well for texturing blocks?

As far as I know there isn't one that's specifically for mc texturing, but most image/drawing software should work, We personally use Gimp
although its is a full image editing software so it can get complicated at times.
also the other option for free (and if your on windows) is simply Microsoft Paint witch is pretty easy to use and should be preinstalled.
Also also, you can texture blocks on blockbench but, I find simpler and easier to use a specific image program.
