A Peculiar Mechanics Issue
So we have a very strange problem with a friend of mine. She's a newbie to Java Minecraft (and Minecraft in general) and we thought it would be good to get her playing a survival world so she can get used to the crafting and mining mechanics of the game.
Her first survival world was on the most recent snapshot (20w30a) on Survival Mode, Normal Difficulty, with Cheats On. All was going good for the first five minutes, she was gathering wood and dirt for her first night and learning how to make wood planks for tables and tools later. Then, she placed some blocks to make a shelter for her first night and ran out, and went to try to gather more, only to find that she can't break blocks. Holding the right button down only makes her arm flail and a crack appear on blocks that restarts in a second so she's stuck in a perpetual loop without breaking blocks. To make matters weirder, she CAN break grass and flowers and can attack and kill other mobs, but she is incapable of breaking full material blocks like dirt and wood and stone.
And here's where it gets really strange.
We thought it was just that world, but the other worlds she made on the same settings refuse to let her break them from the start. It's really frustrating to her because she's really looking forward to playing survival.
Some fixes we've tried and that have FAILED:
-Changing gamemodes to Survival/0, thinking it somehow turned her to Adventure instead; none of these issues are prevalent on Creative
-Rolling back Minecraft versions to full versions and other snapshots
-Updating GPU drivers
-Updating Java RTE
-Running CCleaner to see if there was an error
-Uninstalling Minecraft, deleting all of its files, and reinstalling Minecraft
She is running a Windows10 Home 64-bit OS, we're hoping to find someone with actual information on how we can fix this instead of just spamming 'lol you're on adventure mode' over and over like we didn't even attempt to fix it using that method first.

This looks to be a mouse input problem. The button keeps sending singular clicks instead of holding down. The reason grass works and creative mode works is because they break instantly instead of needing the mouse to be held down. It is easy to see this in the way the punch cooldown bar keeps resetting as if you keep swinging over and over. This is likely just an issue with the mouse itself or the computer's mouse settings, but it could be a peculiar error of some kind.
To further figure out what is happening, I would try using a different mouse, if it is a wired mouse then trying a different usb port, rebinding the mouse click in controls to a keyboard key, or holding the mouse down in another program such as cookie clicker.

When you mentioned the mouse errors, we decided to give that a try, so she used her touchpad instead to see the comparison and yeap, it looks like her mouse is just old and worn down. The touchpad button works just fine.
She is going to order a new mouse, thank you so much for pointing that out, it was really wracking our brains after the reinstall wasn't fixing it.
