Ambient occlusion issue

if you observe these pictures, in the model (which sticks out of the grass block below) i disabled ambient occlusion and disabled "shading," which are both held in the model file. when i disabled smooth lighting, this is what happened, which is what i want:

and this is what happens when i enable smooth lighting.

im not entirely sure how to fix this, i know why it is happening, but then again, im not entirely sure how its happening. i know that, since grass blocks are culled, the faces not being rendered are not receiving any light, so hence the game thinks the model coming out is still part of the block. do you see that dark leaf facing down? thats an example of that, because its tilted only slightly that way, making it dark.

ambient occlusion does not fix this, and i do not understand why it is darkening it. i personally think it is an issue with lighting. could anyone tell me what the issue is?

MC shadow system kinda sucks. My findings from experience.

I don't think you can fix this but you can try:
1.) messing with cullfacing (cullface all in the same direction)
2.) change the parent block (try to find one that doesn't render shadows, this will be a trial and error thing in game)

Shadows and lighting system are hardcoded into the game. You could maybe mod, but the easiest solution is just don't use smooth lighting!

EDIT: Been a known issue for a while, I wouldn't expect a fix anytime soon
