As for professional hosting, our server uses http://www.multiminecraft.com/. We switched from Multiplay just recently and their prices are lower and give more memory for your money. The web-based console is also pretty slick and the file management is easy to use. You can also pay a little extra each month to have access to their staff when you need help updating and fixing plugins. Besides all this, their support staff are amazing and seem to respond within 30 minutes to an hour of submitting a ticket.
As for hosting on your computer, it depends on your computer. You're going to want some RAM you can dedicate to your server as well as some extra memory for a database if you plan on running a grief-logging plugin like LogBlock. Memory usually runs 1GB for every 10 - 15 players you plan to host depending on the quality of your computer. Also plan and having a good internet connection and processing speed so players don't lag while you host them. This option may be cheap due to not having a bill, but I would not recommend hosting from your own computer unless you have lots of time to dedicate to player permissions and configuring files. You would also need to be experienced in those two areas to run a stable, successful server players want to come back to.
I hope this helped.
