Try turning your PC totally off. then wait a few minutes. Turn it back on and see if it works.

You don't give me enough info. How is anyone supposed to fix something they don't know what to fix?
well, are there errors? what are your specs? maybe you have a firewall. I'm not good with computors like that, though.... so, yeah.
You use Windows XP, sorry, but you need a new Operative System or a new computer.
try this go and press Start key + R and type %appdata% then click on .minecraft and save it some where else. then redownload minecraft and try again!

Windows XP still runs Minecraft just fine, and they haven't even made OpenGL 2.1 required for Minecraft yet.

Do you have any modifications installed that require forge? Make sure you have installed any modifications correctly.

@OP, do what everyone is saying, and delete your minecraft folder. The black screen happens when you did a mod wrong, or something of the sort. If it had to do with your OS (which is doesn't) it wouldn't even boot up. If it was your specs, then it'd show an error.
@Everyone, just because XP is going "unsupported", doesn't mean it won't work. It just means they will not be doing any more updates for it, which I'm sure they stopped a couple years ago anyways...

if it still continues, you are lacking drivers that support OpenGL 2.1
Update your Graphics drivers.
Windows Update drivers are "Generic" drivers that Microsoft has created. these do not support OpenGL/CL
