Building a good server spawn

I'm trying to build a good server spawn.
The server will be towny/civilization themed, and all my builds seem to be ugly grey boxes. I would like some help, and please add a list of materials that would look good (midevial-themed spawn, probably a village) and maybe a screenshot as well. Thanks!
