I can't break blocks!

Hey! So I'm in a "rental" server with one other friend. Its 1.8 and I can't break blocks! I've checked my controls, everything is normal. I also checked another server, and I can't break blocks either. I have no problem placing them. Also, I have checked I am in survival mode. I've exited and entered my game.... Exited and entered the server. I'm really frustrated! I've Googled this (did it first) but I can't find answers. If anybody could help, please do! (ASAP )Thanks!

I'm having the same problem except in singleplayer I locked the difficulty at peaceful and when I switched to survival from creative I couldn't break blocks!!! It did the same thing in another single player world!!!! I have optifine installed and was using it and nothing else!!!

If you have access to the server files try checking if you have permission they break blocks. If that doesn't work try reinstalling Minecraft.
Have you tried turning off and back on?
