You mention that you were asking you Administrator... are you on a work computer? It's likely they have security settings to prevent connections to games. I know my work laptop doesn't let me connect to Minecraft
Have you tryed finding a server with a simple IP? Maybe you just typed the ip in wrong...
I've tried re-installing it, it won't work.
Maybe try deleting and Re-installing your Minecraft. It worked for me when I had the same problem. <3>
So you have any sort of hotspot shield? That was happening to me when using one.
I got it working. I thought my IP was already static but it wasn't so it changed. I locked it. All good now
Just by chance you're not running any IP blocking software, such as PeerBlock, right?
I am using the 1.7.4 download. It was up and working fine yesterday. I have noticed other servers down as well today that were up yesterday.
I'm using 1.7.4 but every server will not work, i'll ask my administrator, he might be able to help........plus almost everything that has to do with connections are blocked for me.
My server wont connect either. It was fine yesterday. Was there an upgrade? I'm still new at running servers. Will my server not go online if I have to update certain plugins?
linux dosen't use firewall, and all the servers i've added say they are 24/7, so i'll try the porting from minetest, it might be the same.
Blame the Modem or Router...
They're responsible for 99.9% of why things don't work in minecraft for me..

Well you're on the internet so that's good. Have you tried a dedicated server that you are 100% sure is up? It might be the specific server or servers you are trying to join.
Also, when you start MC, right click and run as admin. That solves it sometimes.

Check your firewall. Mine craft needs about three different program's whitelisted.
It may have something to do with your internet connection.
No, i have a fast and stable internet, but it might be like the Minetest game i played, the servers are on ports, on minetest, i was only able to connect to servers with a port of 30000, anything above or below i couldn't connect.
