Can't Connect to LAN

So I just bought my wife a Minecraft account so that we could play together (yes we have 2 total accounts now) but when we try to play through the Open LAN thing it wont work. but it seems different from what other people have been talking about. when I open the network, she cant find it. when she opens the network connection I can find it, but I can't connect. also when either of us open the connection the IP appears as 0.0.0.0:(random numbers) in the chat box. any help would be great.
