Can't install plugins?

So i've been trying to get plugins on an Ubuntu server.
the files tend to end up like this:

ive renamed one, hopibng it would load, but no luck.

I use CuteFTP on a Mac connecting to a Linux server (Debian), connected with SFTP (SSH2 FTP) security setting. Should have similar capability from Windows.

i cant upload to linux wuith windows. unless there is an FTP thing out there
