Can't Update
Ever since 1.9 released, I couldn't update to the newer updates(1.10, 1.9).. Which is annoying, because every once in a while(every like, three updates) I like to go back to survival and play around with the new stuff.
So Imma cut to the chase. I edit my MC profile in the launcher to use latest update, which obviously is going to tell it to update to 1.10, right? Well, I click 'Play', and the 'Play' button is replaced by 'Preparing..' for a second or two, before returning to 'Play'. It doesn't update at all!
I'm sure I can still run Minecraft, and yes, I have the hard-drive space. I'm running Windows 7, newest Java Update(even though MC doesn't need it anymore), and I've hardly tampered with my .minecraft files, other than adding texture packs and mods(Not content-adding mods like alligators or anything, just stuff like MPM and Optifine)..
Please, any help would be useful. I want to be able to play Lan with my friends again!!

I had the same problem, you have to update to the newest windows version, it worked for me.
After updating there should be a widows in the bottom left corner, click the widows and choose minecraft, which should be on the side, if you don't log in from there it still might update.

ah that happened to me on the 1.10 update from switching it from 1.9 what i had to do since i tried to reinstall java and update it again. that didnt work so i saved all my files and played it on the default launcher 1.10 without any sort of mods loaded. then i made it work with the others by changing the game directory with it. hope this helps
Try updating your drivers and reinstalling minecraft maybe.
Yes. I let it go over-night, and even into most of the next day, but it still keeps it at the 'Play' button, even if I click it after that day and a half of waiting.
Have you waited for it to download?
