Cant play minecraft realms?accessibility_new

ok so i downloaded java edition today. its great. however, the "minecraft realms" button has this lil blinking diamond icon next to it. when i click it just shows me "get a trial" or "buy a realm" and the play button is greyed out. i thought you only had to pay to open a realm. do you have to pay to play on them too?
