Chunks (ram)

How many chunks can 1gb of ram hold? I have seem to get around 10000-12000 per 1gb and have no problems. What would be the max amount of chunks per 1gb do you think? Also what is your view distance set at? Mine is currently set at 6 but i am wonder what i can push it to and still being safe.
