A Completely Vanilla Server?

So a couple days ago I entertained the idea of a completely vanilla server. One of the things I can't figure out is how to protect the spawn from griefers. Another thing I can't figure out is how to keep the server interesting, due to the fact that it would have no plugins whatsoever. Therefore, we wouldn't be able to make different minigames/modes (Factions, The Walls, etc.). I was thinking of doing different things with command blocks, but I think that would cause lots of server lag. So what do you guys think? Is it a good idea? Leave your opinions in the section below!

and factions with redstone. They aren't perfect but they are similar

You are actually wrong. You can set up Walls with redstone. I am very good at redstone and if you need help just ask me .

Moved to Server Help, you might get better feedback there.

There is a configurable spawn protection in the server.properties. Only ops can beak blocks within that radius of the spawn point.

Command blocks haven't caused any server lag for me, unless they were executing commands that would do things like WorldEdit a large area.

It would work if you were connected (Had alot of very smart PMC'ers for example) and had deep pockets. Considering you're a level one, you probably don't have many high up friends, but you might have deep pockets The biggest thing here is deep pockets. Because it is extremely hard to keep a vanilla server running on just donations. And im not sure about the spawn protection ^^ And using command blocks and advanced redstone you could easily make events, but they could be griefed... (Places water) lol.

I think, in the server.properties, or whatever, there's a thing called spawn protection, when I'm back home from my vacation I can show you, I'm not 100% sure if it works. And you can make some vanilla events, as you might have seen on the MindCrack server. I really like your idea for this vanilla server, and if you ever need players, hit me up.

I used to play on one. The spawn was destroyed and there were never any people on. I don't recommend going the vanilla way unless you know that you'll have trusted staff always protecting stuff like the spawn and at least a few people on at a time.

Can't be done. You could have a small bedrock spawn, but that looks ugly. Most players would have trust issues, and alot of betrayals would occur. The vanilla commands suck, players could get away with anything they wanted to. Also, w/out buycraft or a similar plugin it will make it more difficult to have your players donate, so you would quickly run out of funds.
