Custom 1.20 smithing recipes question

Hello all,
Ive been trying to leave a slot blank in my custom smithing recipe in the latest snapshot but minecraft:air as a item doesn’t work and removing a slot line like removing addition with the brackets doesn’t work ether. it seems something needs to be in each slot. am i missing something how can i leave a slot blank?
