Hey guys, i am about to buy a Dedicated server for my minecraft server and some other ofcourse. But lets focus on minecraft now. I have a VPS with Windows Server 2008 running on it and only 3 GB ram and 10GB HDD space. Very limited you see.
The specs for the Dedicated server is

  • Quad Dual-Core Opteron 8220 2.8Ghz - 4 Processors 8 Physical Cores
  • 32GB DDR2 ECC
  • 500 GB HDD

And i want a Free OS and i heard CentOS is great and uses not that much ram and has a GUI.
Also i can choose Debian and Ubuntu ofcourse 64x.
so i my question is does it runs stable on CentOS

Greetz!

This is a good idea. You will not regret learning your way around the command line - it's fun, sometimes.

I dont want to go with a GUI because i want to learn something off it.
Not just setting off a server etc etc. But learning the basics off Linux and ofcourse hosting a server on it. Install some MySQL databases.

But i did get some information and i think off getting Debian

None of the Linux distributions that I know of have a GUI. I'm unsure whether or not you can actually install one.

Personlly, I prefer Debian/Ubuntu, or even Arch Linux.

if you are a real noob you could use ubuntu desktop because it has gui

Obviously, but server hosting companies don't offer desktop versions.

IMHO its just one that you like best, but the one thing that concerns me is updates. some distro can be slow to update packages. for example the latest php version is 5.4.9 and i can only update to 5.4.6 with ubuntu. I dont know about centos having a gui, while i have never used it by it self. I have a phone server that runs software based on centos and it does not have a gui. It does have an installation gui though. and yes it will run stable

and if you are a student you can get windows server 8 for free
