Enchanted Gold vs. Iron

I've been trying to figure this out for a while: how much protection do you need on gold armor for it to be just as good as iron?

I tried looking it up and i can't really find anything... I would go with a very high enchantment just to be safe considering gold is pretty far from iron.

I always thought it worked like swords: so it would be:
Gold: 4
Leather: 4
Chainmail: 5
Iron: 6
Diamond: 7
Protection +1.25
If this is right, 2 protection would bring gold to 6.5 so it would be better than iron
