WorldGuard offers very many good and somewhat important features. Otherwise good luck with that.
Do /f claim safe or /f claim safezone
Then select the area with Worldedit.
do /rg define spawn
Then /rg flags spawn pvp deny

did you actually make a safezone? I just don't quite understand if you actually tried making it yet or not. If so, when you tested it, you did deop yourself right?
You should change the safezone to the warzone, and worldguard you're spawn so that pvp is then denied.
