Well, just got the new snapshot for 1.4.6 and I was just wondering:
How do fireworks work? All I found was a clay-looking ball in the middle of my inventory.

It's kinda complicated. I did kind of lost track of the updates they are doing, but in the first snapshot for 1.4.6, there was only one way to create a working firework.

Recipes:
- Firework star
- - crafted by combining gunpowder with a dye, more dyes = more colors. (You can also add materials listed on the wiki, which will change the explosion effect of the firework)
- Firework
- - put a firework star in the middle, 1 paper to the side, 1-3 gunpowder underneath. (The more gunpowder = the higher will the firework fly before exploding)

The clay like ball is a firework star, which is used in the making a firework. To find a firework, just search it up in the creative inventory. To learn more about crafting, and using fireworks click here
