I tried to install forge on my desktop but it wont work. I have it on my laptop and know how do download but on my desktop it can not find the correct program to run the file and unpack it. I have java and it is fully up to date. Help?

I know how to make forge work because I installed it on my laptop. however when I tried to open Forge to run it for the first time I can't open the Forge installer! it can't find the correct program to run it.
by it cant find the right program to run it do u mean its opening with winrar or something else rather then java? if so then right click, hover over open with, click java, it should run the installer and if you mean it opens up but says theres an error im not sure sorry
I might be able to help you. Download the forge version you want go with recommended 1.7.10 http://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.7.10.html
If you want 1.8 http://files.minecraftforge.net/maven/net/minecraftforge/forge/index_1.8.html
download the installer.
Then run it
make a profile for it then run the game
To download the mods you download them (of course) go to your .minecraft folder then find the mods folder the drag the mods into the folder

Which one are you downloading? When I got forge I used installer-win.
Are you using their automated installer? If not, I'm sorry I cant put links on right now because I don't remember the forge download link off the top of my head and I am posting this from school and forge is blocked at school
Also, if you are using the forge installer and it installs successfully, It will install forge as a new version in your launcher. To launch it, go to Edit Profile then choose Version and look for the Forge version you installed. If you have any questions, let me know!
