I want to host my minecraft server for free. I know it's possible because I already tried a site. only problem is it didn't send my email, only gave me a download that I don't know what to do with.

All free host suck majorly and either restrict your server or your play time. You should either host the server on your own computer if you are just playing with friends or you could host one on Beastnode, lowest is like 4$ with the code below. Which you could customize in every way possible.
