Fresh start with Java Edition and mods
Hi all,
I just did the following:
Reloaded Windows 10 x64 on my laptop.
Installed Java 8 Update 281.
Installed Minecraft Java Edition 1.16.5.
and installed forge 1.16.5 from "files.minecraftforge.net".
Then from curseforge I,
Downloaded "any" mod, in this case "MysticalAgriculture-1.12.2-1.75.jar".
Copied that .jar file to %appdata%\.minecraft\mods.
Opened Minecraft Launcher.
Edited the forge installation and chose "release 1.12.2" and clicked "play".
When Minecraft 1.12.2 opens, there IS NO MODS button. Did I do the steps above correct for getting a mod for Minecraft Java? I've tried this a few times in different ways, but never get a mods button. What please are the working steps to use mods on Minecraft Java Edition?
Thanks much,
Tom.

Installing forge for 1.16.5 won't make that 1.12.2 mods will work
That's 2 different worlds

If using the vanilla minecraft launcher, when setting up a new profile, click 'installations' / 'new' . In the 'versions' box, click the down-arrow and from the list there should be a 'release 1.12.2-forge xxx-xxx-xxx' - the x's will depend on the forge number you have downloaded and installed, the forge versions are always down at the bottom of the list.
If you do not have a release 1.12.2-forge xxx available, then forge has not been properly installed.
You also appear to be installing MC 1.16.5 and then trying to install forge for 1.12.2 - this combination will not work. The version of forge must match the version of minecraft, and any mods you use must be for the same version.

Wow... just, wow. I swear I've been through this over and over, but I rechecked the steps you outlined, and I was able to get a mod to show up. Thank you very much icephantom.
