Getting Started with Java

I thought I'd ask you guys, because I guess many of you would have experience with Minecraft-side Java.

I'm really keen on learning about Java and plugins, but I really have no idea how to start. I'm just wondering how many of you learn't to Java, whether it was through reading pages about it or hand-on activities involving it. I'd prefer to be learning hands on, as it seems to be easier to me - although I could attempt to read (I get bored easily with reading).
