I was just wondering,if I set-up my server with Hamachi, would the public need to use Hamachi to join as well?

Yup, anyone not on your VPN would need to join. The best thing to do if hosting on your personal computer is to port forward :25565. This eliminates the need of any private networks. Also, if you purchase a domain name, you can redirect that domain name to your IP. This is how servers have ip's such as 'poopanuker.com' instead of some long number.
