So, I've recently started using the beta version of Sonic Ether's unbelievable shaders. They're amazing, I love them.
BUT (and there's always a but)
I get low FPS while using them. That, of course, is normal if you don't have a fancy gaming setup. It's also normal if you run the game with the default 950 megs of RAM Minecraft uses.
But my system has four gigs. So, I used Magic launcher to give Minecraft three gigs. It works, it makes my game a little faster. But certainly not three times faster! Not even two times!
If I played Vanilla, this wouldn't bother me much. My FPS with the default launcher is quite good. But when I install shaders, my fps is lowered by about forty, and the debug screen show's I'm using less than 500 megs of the three gigs I allocated for the game!
How do I fix this? How do I force Minecraft to use all the RAM I gave it? I'm assuming the reason it's so frugal is because TNT blasts and large amounts of mobs can take quite a toll on your system, and Minecraft likes to keep a bit of RAM in reserve for such occasions.
But the main server I play on never has crowded mob parties (most farms aren't that big), and TNT terrain damage is disabled! I'm confident that if Minecraft used even half of the RAM I gave it, I could run shaders with a high FPS, and the far render to boot.
And for the reward? If you can help me, then I'll take some very nice, fully shaded screenshots of your server, adventure map, or build. Plus, I'll subscribe to you and tell my own subscribers how awesome you are.
Right below this line is a link to a few screenshots of my debug overlay, with and without shaders.

Anybody? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.
What is your computer specs RAM is not that important if you don't have a good computer..like running minecraft on LInux you get horrible FPS no matter what pretty much.
I run Windows 7 ultimate
My CPU is a dual core pentium (with 2.20 GHZ)
I have, as mentioned before, 4 gigs of ram.
And a one gig graphics card. Can't remember the type, but I know it's AMD.
And as you may notice, I run Minecraft with about 50-60 FPS, without shaders and with all settings on max.

For me I have problems with less then that FPS, I reccomend to use Optifine and it is very good, it bumped me up to over 100FPS. Try using that.
Optifine is required to run Sonic Ether's shaders.
My computer is simply not using everything I give it.
This is what I'm trying to fix.

I'm pretty sure now I think about it..and I tested it, RAM amounts doesn't change the performance of the game unless it needs to use that much. Like I could have 32gb computer compared to 6gb and nothing changes for how fast it will run the same programs since say they use 1gb both of the computers with the same specs but different RAM they should run it the same. Hope this answers it.
But then how does one hope to get higher FPS rates, if it uses a set amount of RAM?
Buy a new CPU?
Another graphics card?
So it simply isn't possible, with mods or otherwise, to force the game to use more RAM?

It uses RAM when needed. I'll give you a great example. I had an Acer laptop 4gb ram with a 1.2 (or a little more) processor. It would be really laggy playing minecraft and having really anything open. I also had 3gb HP notebook with a 2.4 ghz processor. I could do a lot more without lagg but I just couldn't use RAM hogging games.
Now I have an HP g7 Pavillion with 6gb RAM and 2.7ghz up to 3.2 ghz processor. Can handle lots more because I have pretty decent graphics and great processor. RAM is now considered usable.
Note all have dual core processors all AMD.
All in all saying I can have all the RAM in the world and that won't change anything without graphics and processor. I'm not sure what may be wrong with yours but there may be something I can't see. What java version you use and what bit.

Hm. Is it possible to allocate more power to the shaders themselves? Or must it all go through Minecraft?
Even more puzzling is the fact that I can run a 256x texturepack with full settings and the same FPS I get with a 32x.
I run Java standard edition version 7 update 9 (build 1.7.0_09-b05). I'm almost certain it's 64 bit.

I know what could help, try typing msconfig in the Window Search bar then go to boot then click on advanced then put the number of processors to the last possible number!
I did this and noticed a slight increase in my CPU meter, but nothing during gameplay.
*ping*
Ping
you may want a new proccessor or graphics card im afraid ram isnt much
What is your CPU percent during and after gameplay? I notice when I use Camtasia when playing MC mine goes down to 20 FPS. My CPU is around 40 or more playing MC. It could be a program lowering the CPU and fps
Hey there,
I have seen this problem before and have experienced it myself. The only thing I could suggest his that there is another mod out there that can give the same experience of Sonic Ethers Shaders, but it does not give the water shader (Not sure if that is part of SES). I believe it is called GLSL Shaders, then you can just search the minecraft version you want, for eg. GLSL Shader 1.4.6. Sonic Ethers Shaders is back at 1.2.5 and since then, a lot has changed. If GLSL Shaders give you low fps as well, I suggest you just not use a shading mod, you computer mustn't me meant for it.
