Having trouble with a horse.

Alright, so I made a nether tunnel to go find a horse, because my seed was generated in 1.4.7 or so. I can ride up to a portal in the Overworld and jump off, and he goes through without a hitch. However, trying to get the horse through the portal back to my base is not working whatsoever. I did this with other horses after a few tries. Do I need space around the portals, or is it just a bug?

EDIT: I finally found out the problem. A mob will go through a portal, but then it has to "recharge". You have to wait 30 seconds outside of a nether portal (No particle effects) until another mob can pass through. I thought it went like it does for players, which is like a 3-5 second cooldown. Hopefully this helps someone with my same problem.
