This didn't help me either i un-installed all my anti-virus softwares to see if they were blocking it but that wasn't the problem (so now i have to download them again) but basically I feel pretty stupid, if you go on the minecraft and press download under the download button it will say alternative download click on that and the download the one for your pc or mac and it should work, it did for me, so hopefully it will work for anybody else.

I'm using linux/other and it seems to work.The one under Mac isn't working for me.

okay, if you go to minecraft.net, click download up near the top left corner, and instead of clicking the big download button, select the alternative download just below it. that should download the old launcher or launcher.jar (i dunno which because this was my sister's method, i still had an intact minecraft folder)

edit: if you deleted the WHOLE folder, just try to install the launcher again. that should create a folder, but only with the native.log and one other thing like it that i've forgotten the name of lol

I deleted the MC files so what do i do now?

my friend/boss helped me figure this one out because it was doing the same thing to me on my mac. make sure you have "Finder" open in the top left corner, press shift-command-g, type in "~/Library/Application Support/minecraft" , and hit enter, it should bring up your minecraft folder. if you run the launcher.jar by double clicking it, it should bring up a fully functioning minecraft launcher. this method actually bypasses the launcher update that you've been trying unsuccessfully to download

i really hope this works for you, this problem has been so frustrating xD

edit: sad thing is you'll have to do that every time you want to play minecraft, but it's actually not very hard to do once you remember it. though i guess writing it down a sticky note or something is good

it's his launcher. the launcher is updating. What i find that worked for me was deleting all of minecraft but keeps the saves safe somewhere on your desktop then you will need to download the exe version of minecraft and let it update from that. make sure your antivirus allows the application java. also it happened to me on 1.10.2 version sadly as after that day i got that update error.

This used to happen to me a lot. Don't worry, it eventually fixes itself. Somethings I used were shutting down my pc, plugging in and replugging the coord, ect. Idk if this actually helps, but it worked for me.
