I've been getting the same thing for 3 days. Tried:
-Restarting my computer
-Uninstalling then reinstalling Minecraft
-Uninstalling then reinstalling Java
-Testing my ping (It was good)
-Disabling my firewall and adding Minecraft and Java to the allowed apps list
-Adding port TCP 25565 and UDP 25565 to the inbound rules
-Checking the "hosts" file for any line with Minecraft in it. (There was no line with Minecraft.)
I have tried connecting to other servers other than the one I want to go on. It has the same problem. I am really getting sick of this error, can anyone help me and the OP? D:

Hey, You normally get that error when your in a diffrent client (1.6.4) and the server is 1.7+.
It wont be the Mojang servers because I just checked. https://help.mojang.com/

Either you haven't got the right IP put in, you keep losing connection to the servers you're trying to join or the server is down. Could be either, I'm no expert on stuff like this but I've had that from time to time.
