I personally think 1.6.1 is a tricky update
I mean new launcher and new features
It can be especially frustrating about the launcher
My suggestions are out the new launcher on your desktop and name it something
Else than minecraft
My example new version of minecraft.exe
Also make sure you keep the 1.5.2 version or whatever you have
At least in a personal folder you may need it later

For me, it says SE binary has stopped working, I am using windows vista
I don't think u need to keep minecraft 1.5, just keep the mods for 1.5.2, the old launcher for 1.5.2 is still at the older versions at minecraft.net.
