Using stairs is more for a permanent hole than digging down to quickly hunt for caves or something like that

Uh what? If you want to dig down, go ahead, but make a 2 or more block wide tunnel down, that way you aren't directly over the block you're breaking. Otherwise, you could fall into lava & die
