I have a really really nice new computer with 12gb of ram, and minecraft can go up to 700fps. Whenever I record though (using fraps) it drops to about 20fps and has lag spikes half of the time. Which is about the same as what I got when I had the same computer with only 4gb of ram. Would devoting more or less memory to minecraft help, or installing something like optifine?

Try using optifine and make sure you have the set FPS for the recording to 30 (if you do 60 the file size will just be bigger, causing a lack of memory.) I hope this works, because this worked for me even though I have a 4GB of ram computer.

Yeah, FRAPS can be a CPU hog, I've never had too many issues with it, if you're okay with sacrificing a little quality at higher playback resolutions, you can always capture half frames instead of full. On an older comp I had it was the only way to get halfway decent framerates. But your comp shouldn't be struggling that much if its new... :/

It could be FRAPS hogging everything. It could also be that it is eating your CPU, which might not be too good.
