If you let Tekkit use all your RAM, the Operative System would not have enough RAM to run and then crash itself. That's why your OS set a limit.

It's for security reasons IF your OS was to need more RAM.

Try turning off fancy graphics and clouds, saw that on a Tekkit wiki.

Install Java 64bit Version
https://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
From that website only.
Once you have that installed, it should allow more Ram to be used.

Well I am assuming he has 64Bit, because you can't get 5GB of ram without it.

32Bit can only support around 4GB of ram, by doing 2^32, that is the amount.
Then 64Bit is 2^64, which comes to around 13.8 Million terrabytes.

karrthus1 get 64bit java, if you go into minecraft and set the distance to far it won't work because it will need 64 bit java which puts more ram into you computer up to 128 gb depending on your version of windows or mac. also once you get 64 bit of java from that point yo will have 128 gb ram so its a lot yeah ik right

64 bit Java don't add more RAM.
RAM is a physical computer part... You cannot download something physical?

Making it 64bit enables you to allocate more ram. I had the same problem recently when pixelmon kept crashing.
